AI video ads: start with the idea, then choose the tools

A practical guide to planning AI-assisted video ads around one audience, one message and one clear next step.

Choose one job for the video

A product launch, a retargeting ad and a brand introduction need different stories. Before discussing visual styles, write a single sentence explaining the job of this particular video. Who should see it, what should they understand, and what should they do next?

Trying to deliver every brand message in one short ad makes the edit harder to follow. Choose a primary promise. Supporting details can live in a product page, a longer explainer or a separate variation.

Build the opening around a recognisable problem

An opening works best when the intended viewer can recognise themselves in it. A precise frustration, an interesting product moment or a clear visual question gives the next shot a reason to exist.

Write several opening ideas before producing the rest of the film. Compare them against the audience and the promise, rather than simply choosing the most spectacular image. An impressive shot earns its place when it helps the viewer understand the story.

Use a visual system, not a collection of prompts

Define the palette, lighting, framing and movement before generating production assets. Keep a reference board and a short style note that everyone can use to review a shot. This creates a common standard for continuity.

For a real product, identify which details must stay exact: packaging, interface labels, proportions or the logo. Use approved product assets where accuracy matters, and review generated material against those references.

Plan the edit before generating everything

A simple storyboard can list the image, spoken line, on-screen text and purpose of each shot. It reveals gaps early and helps the team spend its effort on the moments the story actually needs.

Leave room for sound design, readable captions and a clear final action. Review the assembled video at its intended screen size. A beautiful desktop preview can hide text that is too small on a phone.

Learn from a small set of deliberate variations

Create variations around a specific question: does the problem-led opening work better than the product-led opening? Keep the rest of the story consistent enough to make that comparison useful.

Agree on the campaign objective and measurement before launch. Record what changed between versions and interpret the results in the context of the audience, placement and offer. The next brief should benefit from that learning.
